Are you doing the right exercises?

Mar 14, 2023

You don't have to talk to many people about exercise to realize that there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the topic.  In fact, I find that not knowing what to do causes many people to do nothing.  In the end this choice is probably worse than doing the wrong exercises.

So, what should I do for exercise?

Oh right.  A few related topics to consider...

  1. What are you trying to accomplish through exercise?
  2. What is your current fitness level?
  3. How long and how often do you plan to exercise?

Questions like these should direct how you spend your exercise time.

If you like to walk or hike and you feel like you can't catch your breath, you should spend some time working on your cardiovascular endurance.

If you feel like muscle pain and stiffness prevent you from doing your favorite activity, you should spend some time strengthening your core.  The torso is incredibly important to overall body function and a weak core often leads to back and joint pain.

In fact, if you plan on doing any strength training, start with the core because pretty much all movements start or pass through the torso.
